Modern Cajun

Poisson Rouge is a Modern Cajun band from Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, proudly known as the "Most Cajun Place on Earth." While deeply rooted in tradition, their sound reaches beyond the past, blending Cajun music with their own diverse influences. Over time, they’ve come to call their progressive style Modern Cajun, a reflection of the energy and creativity they bring to the stage. Fronted by singer-songwriter and accordionist Kylie Griffin, Poisson Rouge delivers soulful French lyrics and infectious rhythms that keep the dance floor moving. With half the band also working as music educators, they’re not just preserving Louisiana’s musical heritage, they’re giving it new life for the next generation.

The sound of Poisson Rouge can be best described as a blend of traditional Cajun/Creole fused with the unique stylings that each member brings to the ensemble. And the tunes are all original, with few references to Cajun or Zydeco standards. The voices and vocal stylings of great women singers are unique and instantly recognizable. Suffice it to say that you will remember this band by the strength of Kylie’s vocals. She has allowed herself to be vulnerable through the lyrics of the tunes she has written as in the tune “You Only Love Me Sometimes,” and her delivery is masterful. She seems to hone directly into the complexity of human interactions, as in a tune like “Amadou” where she says “I will do me, and you will do you.” *See the complete review in the photo section of our profile*
