We are a Glenn Miller style 15-member Big Band located in the Metropolitan Phoenix area. Our talented musicians love to play great music and enjoy playing for audiences of all kinds.
The Swing Memories Big Band was organized in 1983 by Mr. Jerry Surra. Mr. Surra served as director of the Band until 2003.
Swing Memories Big Band performs for benefits, public events, concerts, dances, banquets, luncheons, parties, RV resorts and private functions. We'd love to play at your event! Let us know when we can play for you.

Jon Tyson is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist and has been entertaining live audiences for more than a decade. He is the lead singer of Burning Down The House, San Francisco’s premier Talking Heads tribute band. He is the bassist and band leader of Live Band Karaoke SF. He sings and plays acoustic guitar in the duet What The Folk! and in the quartet Stakes Are Low, both offering a mix of covers and originals, close harmony singing, and good vibes. He performs solo voice & guitar, as well as solo guitar.

He can provide audio gear and audio engineering for all of his projects, as well as for your projects. He shows up on time, is easy to work with, is reliable, and he even carries general liability insurance.

Our sound fuses the popular New Orleans-style brass band style with an eclectic blend of hip-hop, R&B, funk and pop. I offer custom typewriter poetry experiences for any event! You give me a topic, and I write a personalized poem on the spot! These are wonderful memories and keepsakes and add a custom and creative touch to any event!

I also offer spoken word performances. I am the 2024 Boston Poetry Slam Champion, and I was on the winning team for the 2024 Northbeast regional slam and 2025 VOX POP Team Slam. I am currently on the first ever Just Be(Loved) poetry team. 

More about my writing: I have always had a love for writing and have found community through sharing her work at slams, open mics, and local writing groups. My work is published in places such as  Molecule Mag, The Trident Poetry Collective Anthologies, and displayed proudly in the homes of my friends and family. I am the author of a zine, Plantation Fires, that explores protest, identity, ancestry. Outside of events, I teach middle school creative writing, and find great joy in helping students explore their creative power.

One of his favorite things to do is to gather with his fellow songwriter friends to take turns playing their hits (and few that might be or should have been hits) while trading old stories and inside jokes with an audience more accustomed to the polished product they hear on the radio. This Bluebird-style show is part old friends around a campfire, part improvisational musical theater. Every show is different. But every show is guaranteed to bring a laugh and a tear.

My workshops encourage deep attention to the creative process. For all sessions, we begin with education, explore and experiment, and end with reflection. Our workshops are designed for audiences ages 16+. 

In Short Order Poetry, participants learn how to craft poems on the fly. The lecture teaches the value of personal story and encourages attendees to hone their skills in finding the essence of a story. Participants will experiment with turning that essence into poems. Participants will leave the workshop better listeners and better artists. These skills lend themselves to improved emotional intelligence in the home and workplace.

This workshop is perfect for small-midsize offices seeking to improve interpersonal relations among staff!

My workshops encourage deep attention to the creative process. For all sessions, we begin with education, explore and experiment, and end with reflection. 

In Collaging Manifestations, participants lean into vulnerability and craft visual narratives to compliment poetry. Participants will learn basic tenets of poetic interpretation, select a short poem from an instructor-provided catalog, then craft a visual collage based on the chosen poem. The final collage serves as a totem for participants to carry with them for inspiration and motivation. Participants will leave with their totems and a new lens through which to appreciate creative writing.

This workshop is perfect for retreats and events meant to help participants reflect and reset.

In this experience, I trade stories for poems! Guests/participants will give me a prompt (could be one word, could be a short story from their childhood), and I will craft a poem in real time based on the shared prompt. Guests will receive their poems typed on handmade paper or printed on a collage card, leaving them with an artful memento of your event.
